Considering how I have always been a fan of MechWarrior since playing it on the PSOne, it seemed only natural to let those interests take over when I was asked to design and model a character for my Introduction to Maya course. Since we will be working with our character all semester I wanted to make sure I had fun building the model and would enjoy texturing and animating it in the future

One of the recommendations in the project handout suggested making the character either more robotic or organic. While it seems pretty clear my character is robotic I wanted to blur the distinction a bit.

This assignment has probably been one of my favorites so far. I look forward to developing this character further and bringing it to life with some of Maya’s awesome lighting and animating effects, so check back later for more updates!

The latest development with our conceptual 3D sketching in Maya for the eVolo competition. Loose, fast, and fun modelling!

Our reviewers appreciated the more refined yet conceptual look of these two images and gave us plenty of great criticism to work with. Our project will be in Rio de Janeiro which inspired the Favela like ‘pez-dispenser’ units flanking the main tower. The exterior of the shell will incorporate much of our sustainable agenda while the varying floor-like plates within the shell satisfy various residential and commercial agendas.

While the ’skytches’ advanced our project in the right direction, they have served their purpose and will not be refined any further. We are now returning to our sketchbooks to work on the next set of concept drawings to further develop our vision. Also, the form was unconsciously albeit strikingly familiar to this particular eVolo entry which was awarded Second Place in ‘08.

In the process of working on our submission for the eVolo competition, we decided to take a few of our sketches to Maya and create a few renderings we dubbed "skytches". Here is our first take of this process.

As architecture students, we are always encouraged to find newer and better ways to communicate our design concepts. This exploration uses Maya as a sort of sketching medium. These three images took about 90 minutes to produce. The sky and water were the simplest elements to incorporate but are still aesthetically compelling. We aim to emphasize form and scale. Scale is determined by the perspective of the camera, and materials are used as simply as possible.

SKYTCH_v01a takes our original concept and adds green ‘wings’. A major feature we plan to incorporate in our design is the developing science of vertical farming. The green ‘wings’ explore what this may look like.

The naming process is similar to how someone might organize a computer program. SKYTCH (the encompassing project) _v01 (the specific version/instance being shown) a (indication of variation) i (alternate views). Another view of the instance above would be called SKYTCH_v01aii, while another variation would be called SKYTCH_v01b.

Logos can be difficult, especially if you're designing one for a picky client. There are many factors when considering logo design including simplicity, complexity, typography, color schemes, ect. Not only do these logos achieve an equilibrium between all of these elements, they will blow your mind.

Hello LED – Take a closer look. The logo is 1. and LED, 2. the letters L.E.D., and 3. a face. Awesome.

Swing – Really cool color scheme and perspective on the swinging letters.

Xpress Boxes – This is a great example of combining 2 elements in a logo – the box is also an X.
